Stacking Without a Coach
Fri Apr 17, 2020 9:44 pm
Do any teams without a coach stack? If so, how? Any ideas on how to stack without a coach would be appreciated as well.

We do. It isn't always the easiest thing, but it can't come down to favoritism. My team did a system which said how much you helped/hurt the team. Then we looked at those scores, the roles people have done, and balanced it that way. Overall no systems perfect, but if anyone can say "this decision came down to favoritism" than you're doing it wrong. It should be based on some type of system involving points/ranks/performance

We have our coach give feedback about their observations of team members they've seen in round or helped prepare, but they don't actually get a final say in the stacking process. Our fall team captains are the ones who ultimately make the stacking decisions, and they use the coach's feedback as much or as little as they want in the process. I personally don't recommend shutting a coach out of the stacking process altogether, because 1) the students who are stacking can have their own biases and friends they want to be stacked higher and 2) if you don't trust your coach to give an accurate assessment of people's performances during stacking, what are they even around for? That being said, wanting to keep a coach from overruling students and making a final decision totally makes sense! Finding a happy middle ground has worked well for us.
