Trial by Combat 2021
Wed Nov 25, 2020 2:50 pm
We are now accepting applications for Trial by Combat 2021, which will be held virtually June 25-27, 2021.
This is the 1-on-1 collegiate mock trial national championship, hosted by Drexel University Kline School of Law and UCLA School of Law. You can read the details here. The field is limited to 16 competitors among 6,000 nationwide. Each competitor may be assisted by one coach and one second chair. There is no registration fee, just a $400 deposit that is refunded after the competition.
As in years past, we plan to fill some spots before regionals, some before NCT, and the remaining spots immediately after NCT. Many students wait until later in the year to develop their resumes further, though you are also welcome to apply sooner (if someone appears competitive for a spot, we name them a finalist and ask them to update their application after ORCS).
This year's application includes an option to provide links to video of your trial performance. We frequently receive applications from students who explain that they don't have more awards because they split ranks without their talented co-counsel or that they don't have awards at top tournaments because their team has not been invited. If you fall into those categories, video submission is especially encouraged.
If you have questions, please let me know (bernstein@law.ucla.edu). Happy holidays!
Justin Bernstein
Director of Trial Advocacy
UCLA School of Law
P.S. - I know many of you are applying to law school now or soon. If you are applying to UCLA Law and might want to compete for our Trial Team, you should email me. I work closely with our admissions office, and we have scholarships exclusively for those who excelled in AMTA. It's the same with our co-host, Drexel Law: they have courtroom scholarships and a fabulous team; contact competitions director -- and former Top Gun champion -- Phil Pasquarello with questions (ppasquarello@gmail.com).

Here is our schedule for Trial by Combat.
Tomorrow (Friday) we will introduce our 16 competitors and two alternates at the opening ceremony. We will record the presentation and add it to our tournament YouTube page. Once the opening ceremony concludes, we will release the case. We will include a link to the case problem here, as well.
Trials are Saturday and Sunday. For Zoom stability/security, those rounds will be closed to the public -- but we will make them available later this summer.
The final round is Sunday afternoon. It will be livestreamed on the Trial by Combat YouTube page.
