2021 Pre-Regionals Top Performers Empty 2021 Pre-Regionals Top Performers

As we approach Thanksgiving, we have compiled a list of top performers from the fall. Just like the last couple years, we are defining a top performer as someone who has taken at least two awards at top invites. This year, since there was no NCT, we are defining a top invite as one where 25% or more of the field was made up of teams who were either 2020 NCT qualifiers or 2019 NCT qualifiers whose ORCS got cancelled. This means that the following invites qualify so far:

GAMTI, Virginia (95%)
Yale Invite: Weddings Division, Yale (85%)
Tobacco Road, Duke (75%)
Classic City, Georgia (60%)
Mumbo Jumbo, Tufts (57%)
Scarlet & Grey, Ohio State (54%)
GOT, Vanderbilt (54%)
Soda City, South Carolina (50%)
Mock at the Rock, Northwestern (47%)
Colonial Classic, William & Mary (42%)
Habbeas Hippopotamus (Group 2 Only, all other groups were below the threshold) (37.5%)
Cornshucker, Iowa (35%)
Charm City, UMBC (32%)
Happy Valley, Penn State (31%)
Wonk, American (25%)

There are certainly many great competitors on teams not invited to these particular invitationals, and many who simply haven been recognized because they share a bench with other strong competitors. But we do think that these competitors deserve a shout out for prevailing against such tough competition.

We will add addenda after any future top tournament tab summaries are released.

Attorneys:
George Alford, Washington & Lee (Colonial 17D; HVI 20D)
Thomas Azari, UMBC (MJ 20P, 18D; ToRo 20D)

Do you have the list of names from top to bottom? Also, do you have an individual competitor analysis?

What precisely do you mean by a list from top to bottom? Are you asking for a compiled list including everyone in the first list and the addenda? Are you asking for us to rank them?

We do not have a written subjective analysis of individual competitors (for any number of privacy and competitive reasons) beyond our TBC analysis which comes out every June.

MidWestAnalysis wrote:For the list, I meant in terms of ranking those who made the list

No. And the reason is that once you get beyond the very basic metrics we use to put people on the list, any ranking would become almost meaningless. Different people have gone to different tournaments, played different teams and are on benches with different teams. Further, it's difficult to track precisely who was at what tournaments (e.g., was a particular person at a tournament and just didn't award or not at the tournament at all). The latter is particularly true over zoom. Usually we would have people at a lot of these tournaments who could tell us such things and keep an eye out, but even that would not be perfect and we wouldn't have the man power to be able to keep track of absolutely everyone. Over Zoom, unless one of our people has played a team, we don't know exactly who was on their roster and we simply do not have that many people.

That means that there are two big problems with us issuing anything like an accurate ranking.

(1) Given that everyone had a different schedule and different teammates, we would need to weight every award based on the competitiveness of the tournament, how well their team did, and how many ranks they got. But first, the idea that we can weight the difficulty of a tournament is already an issue we face in just making the list we have above because often the team represented as an A team at a tournament is actually a much weaker B-F team or just an unstacked team. We can accept that ambiguity when we are just asking the simple question of whether the tournament was >25% NCT teams (for one thing most of the tournaments are well above the threshold so even if there are a few lower teams it doesn't affect much). But if we want to create a tournament difficulty rating of the kind we would need to do a comprehensive rating we would need to know exactly which team was at every tournament and to what extent they are stacked. And of course we know a lot about that but we don't have complete information. Second, even if we were to rate the awards we would need to determine how much to factor in competitiveness of the tournament and the success of the team and the weight we gave each of those factors would be inherently arbitrary (given that we don't really have a statistic for checking what weights would be best for individual awards).

(2) Even assuming that we had a great weighting system to determine hose strong each award is, we would then have to confront whether we were going to use an additive or averaging model. Suppose we did an additive model where we just totaled up the weighted awards people got. Then we would seriously reward the people from programs that send each team to a lot of tournaments because those people have more award opportunities. Suppose we just averaged then. Then there would be a lot of cases where it's better for your ranking to earn one 19 rank award at a competitive tournament and no other awards then to win a 19 rank award at the same tournament and also a 16 rank award at another. That seems counter intuitive. We could try to fix that by "averaging in" the fact that someone went to a tournament and didn't award at a tournament which would essentially be a penalty for not awarding, but then we have the issues that (a) as mentioned above, we don't always know who was at what tournament if they don't award, (b) there is a massive difference between not awarding at 15 ranks and not awarding at 8 ranks and this couldn't account for that unless we had every team's ballots which we don't, and (c) every tournament has a different award cut off and it seems unfair that people who go to big tournaments get penalized for having less than 19 ranks whereas people who go to smaller tournaments only get penalized for having less than 16 ranks.

All of that is a really long way of saying that individual awards are incredibly inaccurate and not really super comparable. We already acknowledge every year that the issues above affect our current list and may lead to some excellent competitors not making their way only the list. But trying to make a finer grained ranking of competitors is likely to be even more inaccurate.

I'm not sure what you mean by "affected the individual list."

The list at the top of the page contains all competitors who had 2 or more qualifying awards as of the date that it was posted. We have not updated that posting so if you just look at the list at the top of the page it has not been edited. People who attained their second award after that date or who were already on the list at the top of the page and won additional awards later are listed in the addenda that we have subsequently posted.
