Most Competitive Invitationals in the Midwest 2020-2021
Tue Apr 20, 2021 8:28 pm
Hey y'all! Now that nationals are over (congrats to UMBC!), I just wanted to take a quick retrospective look on this year's invitational season, in order to determine whose invitationals were the most competitive. I am only looking at the 17 invitationals that were hosted by teams in my home region of the Midwest, but I would love to see what the data looks like for other areas of the country. In this chart, I calculated the proportion of competitors in a given invitational that qualified to nationals, as well as whether they placed in the top 10 in their division. Invitationals are grouped into tiers with other competitions of a similar caliber.
A few notes:

A few notes:
- Wow, Great Chicago Fire is an incredibly competitive invite. It's completely in a tier of its own in the Midwest. If you finished in the top 10 in your division at Nats, there's a seventy percent chance that you competed at GCF in January, that's crazy.
- This was Northwestern's first time hosting Mock at the Rock and they managed to recruit an extremely competitive field, including both National Final Round teams. They're in the company of established prestigious invitationals like Scarlet & Grey and Wolverine Classic.
- If you have the tab summary for any Midwest invitational I didn't include, please send it to me and I'll update the list. I know for a fact that I'm missing Luther College's Englehardt Throwdown, since the link on the AMTA website does not work.

This was really interesting to look at, thanks for sharing! I'd be curious to see how it would look if you factored in # of teams who qualified for ORCS as well, since there are quite a few teams from the Midwest that often qualify for ORCS but not always NCT.

Yea awesome work. I'd really like to see this analysis for 2019-2020, since that's probably more reflective of what the future will be like. Zoom tournaments brought a lot of teams together that otherwise might have been priced out.
This would also be very helpful!
