Coronavirus Impacting Princeton ORCS Empty Coronavirus Impacting Princeton ORCS

Mon Mar 09, 2020 4:00 pm
So if you guys weren't aware, Princeton announced today that in an effort to limit the spread of Coronavirus, they will be suspending all in person classes, and more importantly announced that "Hosted events that involve more than 100 people or use more than one-third of their venue’s capacity must be postponed or canceled. This includes events sponsored by the University, schools, departments or units, as well as student-sponsored events."

The full announcement can be read here: https://www.princeton.edu/content/covid-19-coronavirus-information

The big question is what's going to happen to the Princeton ORCS next weekend? Based on these guidelines, AMTA will be forced to either cancel the competition, or move it to a new venue. Is that even possible? And if an entire ORCS is cancelled, will they also cancel Nationals in a month?

Also, the tournament website has an update:
"09MAR2020 UPDATE RE: COVID-19 AND UNIVERSITY GUIDELINES: On March 9, Princeton University released new guidelines restricting and regulating public events on campus. No student, faculty, staff, or administrator at Princeton has tested positive for COVID-19, but the University has taken its recent steps out of an abundance of caution.

Princeton Mock Trial is currently working with University administrators and AMTA representatives as the situation develops. At this time, Princeton still intends to host ORCS. We will keep all programs updated on the effects that new University guidelines and COVID-19 developments in the Northeast may have on the location, judging pool, team drops, and our overall ability to host Princeton ORCS."

I assume AMTA will just be extremely cautious during the weekend and advise teams to not travel around NJ, but I doubt they're going to cancel Princeton ORCS this late.

Latest update from AMTA has the Princeton ORCS moved from the school's facilities to conference rooms at a nearby hotel.

Dear Princeton ORCS Teams:

I hope you are all doing well tonight.  I am writing with an important update on the upcoming Princeton ORCS tournament.

First and foremost, the Princeton ORCS tournament will be proceeding as scheduled hosted by AMTA.  However, the tournament is being moved to a new location.  AMTA is in the process of securing conference room space at The Westin Princeton at Forrestal Village to host the tournament this weekend.  Once space is finalized, we will provide an updated tournament packet and/or information on where to report on Saturday for Team Check-In and subsequent tournament logistics.

In addition, we want to make clear that participant safety is always AMTA's first priority.  As always, participation in AMTA and college mock trial is voluntary, and we trust everyone will make their own informed decisions regarding whether participation in AMTA's tournaments in the right decision for them.  Furthermore, we trust that all teams will abide by local ordinances and institutional policy in determining whether to travel and/or attend AMTA's tournaments.

Due to the change in location and space limitations, we are unfortunately asking that each team limit the number of extra spectators, family members, and/or visitors that you bring to the tournament.  While we understand that your parents and/or family/friends will want to come watch you compete at this level of competition, we also want to ensure that the space in the rooms is used for your trials, providing a well to argue in, and providing suitable space to allow you to showcase your skills.

We know that you have devoted many months toward preparing for the tournament, and we are dedicated to providing the opportunity for all who wish to participate the ability to do so.  Please make your safety the top priority in determining which course of action to pursue and keep hosts and AMTA informed of your plans.  Should you have additional questions or concerns, please contact me by replying to this email.
