Great Lakes Analysis and Power Rankings
Sat Jan 04, 2020 1:20 am
Using the tab summaries available on the AMTA website, I complied all records/results/etc. for the Great Lakes programs (considered as MI, IN, OH, KY). This region is much smaller than the Midwest rankings conducted a few weeks ago. The regions may change in the future. Some oddities will apply, but the only teams eligible for these rankings are from these states.
The following section is the ten highest teams in terms of BPT (Ballots per tournament), with no other consideration put into the order. ALSO: this is only consistent of the tab summaries that have been posted on the AMTA site as of 1/4. Teams with only one recorded tournament will not be considered for either section below. BPT is adjusted to an 8-ballot average, meaning scores from tournaments like GAMTI are turned into an 8-ballot percentage.
RK - CODE - TEAM Record- #of Tourneys - BPT - Notable results
1. 1735 UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN (13-3) (2) (6.5BPT) (2nd at Illinois)
2. 1234 PATRICK HENRY (18-8-2) (3) (6.33BPT) (1st at Charm City)
3. 1283 EASTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY (24-6-2) (4) (6.25BPT) (1st at Red Cedar) (2nd at IUPUI) (3rd at Penn St)
4. 1734 UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN (37-12-3) (6) (6.03BPT) (1st at Case Western) (2nd at E Kentucky)
5. 1149 HILLSDALE COLLEGE (22-8-2) (4) (5.75BPT) (2nd at Illinois St) (3RD at Case Western)
6. 1181 THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY (25-10-1) (4) (5.72BPT) (1st at Duke)
7. 1241 EASTERN KENTUCKY UNIVERSTIY (22-9-1) (4) (5.63BPT) (1st at Illinois St) (3rd at William & Mary)
8. 1150 HILLSDALE COLLEGE (11-5) (2) (5.5BPT) (3rd at Illinois St)
9. 1591 MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY (19-12-1) (5) (5.4BPT) (1st at Yellowjacket)
10. 1361 CASE WESTERN UNIVERSITY (16-eight) (3) (5.33BPT) (3rd at Red Cedar)
HMs
1002 MIAMI, 1534 CINCINATTI, 1590 MICHIGAN STATE, 1114 NOTRE DAME
POWER RANKINGS - based on results alone, no consideration given to traditional program strength or stacking, only the results compared to the strength of the tournaments. Deference is also given to head-to-head or comparative results from teams in the same tournament. Obviously there's no way this can be completely comprehensive or objective (and I haven't seen most of the teams on this list), but hey, that's what the comments section is for, right?
1. 1734 UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN (37-12-3)
2. 1283 EASTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY (24-6-2)

8. 1241 EASTERN KENTUCKY UNIVERSITY (22-9-1)
9. 1001 MIAMI UNIVERSITY (21-17-2)
10. 1002 MIAMI UNIVERSITY (24-15-1)
IN THE HUNT (NO PARTICULAR ORDER)
1361 CASE WESTERN (16-eight), 1591 MICHIGAN STATE (27-13), 1534 CINCINNATI (19-12-1), 1114 NOTRE DAME (9-6-1), 1362 CASE WESTERN (12-8-4)
(Remember - no consideration is given to stacking, only the strength of the team that has been performing under this listed AMTA assigned number -- For example, 1001 Miami would obviously be placed higher in the power rankings were they stacked)
*The 'eight's are written out because they kept turning into emoticons. Sorry- I hate it too.

I’d bet my life on Patrick Henry’s success this year. But also, they are from Virginia. So why are they on this list?
I also see major flaws in this analysis because we often don’t know if it’s an A, B, or C team competing. In Patrick Henry’s case, it looks like they went to 3, so it could have easily been one team to each. I also know they they put a strong emphasis on moot court during the fall, and that many of their mock trial members to both (very successfully, I might add... they dominate that sport).
I have no affiliation to the Patrick Henry Mock Trial team.

A lot of these teams were prestack for most of the fall semester, so I’m really interested to see how these rankings change in the next part of the season if at all.

Yeah... not sure why PH is on here. My bad. I have a huge list of all the team numbers and filter it down by state- must have had them filled out incorrectly. Well- just move everybody up a spot.
And yes, obviously these rankings mean almost nothing because of stacking- it's just fun to look at.
